Dr Hassanah Briedis brings her wealth of experience as an art therapist to a theoretical and practical exploration of how art therapy techniques can usefully be introduced into 'talk therapy' approaches.
Cost: AAHTC Members: $80; Non-members: $100

Saturday 16th July, 9.30 - 4.30 pm at:

Phoenix Institute

314 Queen Street, Melbourne (Corner of La Trobe St. and Queen St.)

Dr Hassanah Briedis

presents

Practical Applications of Art Therapy in Psychotherapy

Clients who enter psychotherapy generally expect a ‘talking therapy’ approach, compared to clients who specifically choose art therapy as their method of therapeutic intervention. Art therapy techniques can support and complement conventional talking psychotherapy, but require certain differences in approach. This one-day workshop looks at the ways art therapy can be incorporated into a psychotherapy session. Participants will have the opportunity to practice the techniques of introducing a client to the idea of creative work, helping them work through the art-therapy process, interpret and understand what they have produced, and experience the creative response of the therapist. The workshop offers insights into the neurobiology behind art therapy’s effectiveness within a psychotherapy setting.

Workshop outline:

9.30 - 10.00      Introductions, overview of workshop, questions and expectations

10.00 - 11.00     Lecture + discussion/tea time

11.00 - 11.30     Sharing of AT techniques and contextual strategies.

11.30 - 11.45     Preparation for Pair work: individual writing up of an unresolved issue.

11.45 - 12.45     First 1-hour client session in pairs

12.45 - 1.45       Lunch

1.45 - 2.45         1-hour client session

2.45 - 3.45         Sharing and discussion of issues arising

3.45 - 4.15         Further practice, as a group, of AT applications with a client

4.15 - 4.30         Closure and goodbyes.

EXPLANATIONS:

Lecture :

The lecture will address the following issues relating to psychotherapy:

What is psychotherapy and how does it differ from counseling?

Humanistic, client-centred and transpersonal approaches. (emphasizing
similarities rather than differences.)

Why do people enter psychotherapy?  What do they want/hope from it?

What are the areas of psychotherapy?  (ie, grief & loss, depression, trauma, relationship problems, etc.)

How does art therapy assist these approaches?   What are the most common applications of art therapy within the context of a talking psychotherapy?

Why does art therapy work?

Introduction to the techniques of applying AT within a psychotherapeutic setting:

  1. How to help the client enter the artistic exercise
  2. How to help them continue through the process & conclude it
  3. How to help them make sense of what they’ve produced
  4. Therapist's intersubjective response.

Sharing of AT techniques and strategies:

Elaboration of points 1 to 4 above.

1-hour Client Session  (in pairs)

10 mins discussion of chosen personal issue
Therapist practices leading client into art-making
20 mins art work (which may include interruptions & discussion)
20 mins processing (which may include further art-work)
10 mins writing up experience (both therapist and client write up)

Pair will have to adhere strictly to 1 hour time limit, as in normal practice.

Practice, as a group.

There may be time to give a demonstration of a particular strategy or particular therapeutic difficulty, with just one pair as the example.

Psychodrama

Workshop Details

This workshop provides an introduction to the key techniques of psychodrama. These techniques may be used in a group context or in one-to-one counselling.

The essence of psychodrama is that it involves the enactment of issues rather than talking about them. Accordingly the workshop will focus on experiencing the psychodramatic approach to therapy rather than talking about it. Jacob Moreno developed the theory and practice of psychodrama around the central notion that authentic living revolves around creativity and spontaneity. Participants in this workshop should expect to develop an understanding of this theory and practice through experience a s protagonists in their own dramas and auxiliaries in those of other participants. They will have the opportunity to practice techniques such as doubling, mirroring, role reversal and spontaneity training and develop some skills that they can use in their own counselling practice.

Workshop Presenter

Dr Bernie Neville is Adjunct Professor of Education at La Trobe University and Head of the Holistic Counselling program at the Phoenix Institute. He has been involved for many years in the professional education of both teachers and counsellors. He is the author of Educating Psyche: Emotion, Imagination and the Unconscious and numerous other publications on Education and Counselling. Since he first discovered Jacob Moreno's psychodrama in 1970 he has been a keen student of Moreno's theory of spontaneity, creativity, and interpersonal dynamics and an enthusiastic practitioner of the techniques he invented.

Participating Counsellors

Jane Hall is a counsellor, psychotherapist and bio-energetic therapist who uses an integrative approach to practice, combining approaches from counselling, bio-energetic and transpersonal therapies and life coaching to suit the unique needs of each person. Person centered counselling, emotion focused psychotherapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and energy based therapies such as Therapeutic Touch form the basis of her practice. She also uses arts based activities, stillness and mindfulness meditation, journaling, reflection and Australian Bush Flower Essences. Her aim is to provide people with support in: developing balance within themselves and in their life; finding relief from distress and pain; moving towards healing, and accessing their potential for growth and transformation.

Zoe Krupka: I am an experienced counsellor, psychotherapist, group facilitator and supervisor. I currently have a long-standing counselling and supervision practice; teach counselling skills and theories within the Master of Counselling program at La Trobe University; and write articles on therapy, counsellor supervision and social philosophy for various publications.

In over 15 years I have never stopped enjoying my work with people. I believe that my enthusiasm for therapeutic work comes directly from the practice of meeting each person as a unique individual, rather than a diagnosis, or a problem to be solved. Each counselling relationship demands a new way of working and a different quality of attention and tenderness. Problems are inevitable, and emotional pain can come not only from traumatic events, but also from the difficult business of living.

In the public and private sectors, I have worked with the federal police and in various other workplaces as a counsellor, educator and supervisor. I also have experience working in community settings with homeless young people, parents, children, refugees and asylum seekers.

David Frank might best be described as a humanistic and transpersonal counsellor and hypnotherapist. He has spent a large part of his career investigating the mostly unused potential of the subconscious mind through hypnosis. At a personal level David combines self-hypnosis with meditation to work towards individuation. David first became interested in counselling in 1985 when he was working for social services in the UK looking after people with severe intellectual disability. Building on a course in basic counselling skills, he went on to obtain a diploma in humanistic counselling, a diploma in hypnotherapy, and subsequently a B.A.(Hons) degree which included a research component that revealed by EEG analysis the existence of hypnotic states among subjects receiving person-centred counselling. For much of his career, David has worked closely with the UK medical system, preparing and presenting client-centred counselling courses to nursing staff and social workers. In addition to private practice, he has also worked as a counsellor within UK medical centres providing counselling to medical cases with emotional, social, phobic and addiction problems. This included assisting cients with various levels of anxiety and depression, anger management issues, sexual amd marital problems, and adults who had been emotionally or sexually abused as children. In 2002 research that David carried out led to the international publication of his book, "Hypnosis & Counselling in the Treatment of Chronic Illness," that he co-wrote with his colleague Dr. Bernard Mooney. This book received excellent reviews and in 2008 was released as a paperback entitled, "Hypnosis and Counselling in the treatment of Cancer and other Chronic Conditions" which is available in Australia from Footprint Books. Today, David has a private practice in Melbourne.

.:. Breathwork  date to be decided  December 2011

Judith Ayre leads an exploration of the "Holotropic" Breathwork style developed by psychiatrist Stan Grof and the "Rebirthing" style developed by Leonard Orr and Sondra Ray.

Saturday Month xth, 9.30 - 5.00 pm at:

Phoenix Institute

Judith Ayre

presents

Breathwork

Details: The day will explore both the 'Holotropic' breathwork style developed by psychiatrist Stanislav Grof, and the 'rebirthing' breathwork developed by Leonard Orr and Sondra Ray.
The theoretical orientation of both styles will be described. The Grof model is more academic and complex while the Orr/Ray model is more New Age and tends to be based on Eastern philosophy. In terms of the actual practice of breathing however there is little difference between them.

Both breathwork styles use consciously controlled 'connected breathing', though the Orr/Ray style user a gentler breathing process. These will be explained and participants will be free to choose whichever suits them.
Both use a partner or 'sitter' who helps facilitate the process for the person doing the 'breathe'. The Grof style uses evocative music and the counsellor/sitter may apply gentle pressure to the body in places where resistance may be present. This is similar to the somatic psychotherapy known as "Hakomi".
Each workshop participant will have the opportunity to have a complete 'breathe' and be a 'sitter'.

In preparation for the day, attendees should:

  • Have a light breakfast and plan for a light lunch,
  • Wear loose fitting clothes,
  • Endeavour to stay well hydrated.

What you need to bring:
The breathe is carried out lying on the floor, and typically during a breathe the body begins to feel cold. Therefore, for your comfort, attendees collectively need to bring mats, foam mattress or cushions and a pillow to lie on, and warm blankets or doonas.

Judith Ayre is a counsellor and psychotherapist who works holistically within a Transpersonal and soul-centred framework. Judith is a member of the Australian Counselling Association, the Counsellors and Psychotherapists Association of Victoria, the Australian Association of Holistic and Transpersonal Counsellors and the Society of Counselling and Psychotherapy Educators. She is on the Individual Register of the Psychotherapists and Counsellors Federation of Australia. Judith also teaches at the Phoenix Institute and La Trobe University.
